Don’t Eat Fresh Spinach

I heard on the radio this morning on my way to work that FDA has issued a nationwide warning about contaminated spinach. The news scared me because we bought a bag of fresh organic spinach from Costco last Sunday and ate last night (yes, including our one-year old daughter). Fortunately, we cooked it.

The bacteria found in the tainted spinach is E. coli, which is responsible for one death in the current outbreak in Connecticut, Idaho, Indiana, Michigan, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, and California. For more details about the warning and the bacteria, check out the story from AP Health.

At least for now, you should give up spinach salad as the bacteria can’t be washed away. Though thorough can kill E. coli, you may want to throw away your packaged spinach if you have any concerns.
